Python: Noob Friendly Programming Language To Start Coding

learn python - first step to coding- picateshackz.com

Python is exploding. And there’s a reason for that. It’s awesome! It seems everyone is learning it, teaching it, and hacking with it. Folks are even making python puppets and writing poetry in Python. While Python is easy to learn, it’s not necessarily easy to learn.

This is not a discussion on how to hack or program with python, it’s a discussion on why I personally chose python as my first programming language. I’m not a developer, I’ve never written a program from source code to production. So when I started looking for a language to jump into I wanted something that could be used a stepping stone for lower level languages.
I chose python simply because I wanted to learn programming logic first, and syntax second. For those of you unfamiliar with those terms logic is how a program runs. It’s the decision making progress that determine what comes next and is derived of conditional statements such as if, if not, else, or’s etc. It’s the heart of any programming language and is usually the measure that separates good programmers from bad ones.
Syntax is how a program is written, it’s the way a language looks and reads/writes. Essentially syntax is programming grammar. Unlike grammar in the English language (Which I admit to being poor at) programs will NOT work unless you get the syntax exactly correct.
Logic is basically universal amongst all programs and to me is the difficult part while syntax can vary. This is exactly why I wanted to learn the logic first, once you understand how programming works you can kind of look at any program and pick it apart.

For example, in Java you would program:

public class HelloWorld{public static void main (String[] args){System.out.println(“Hello, World!”);}}

But in python 3 you would type:

print(“Hello, world!”)

As you can see these two look very different, but they do the same thing. They print “Hello, world!” to standard out. As you can see Java has quite a bit going on compared to python but there are similarities behind each of the languages. The string “Hello, World!” that is printed to standard out is encased within quotes, and you call a function to print within each language. System.out.println() in Java and print() in python3. As you begin to learn more about functions, modules, libraries, variable declaration, objects, data structures and so on you will find that the similarities are even more apparent and your ability to decode them will expand. This is why many people can program or work in several languages.
As you saw from the above example python is a very compact and concise language. If you combine the large community, human readable syntax, powerful libraries and tutorial quantities its an easy choice to see why I started with python.
I did not learn from one resource and I bounced around between several sites and books. While I am not fluent in python I offer this bit of advice. Stick with it, programming is difficult. Its easily the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to learn in my life. I found that even though I struggle with learning concepts and logic after a while my mind adapts and and I begin to understand concepts that used to give me a lot of trouble. So stick with it.
If you’re interested in python I recommend learning from the following resources in the following order. The following are the amazing resources I discovered and the hard-won lessons I learned on my adventure into programming.

Hack Through the Thicket

The best way to learn Python is with a project. Think of a (simple) problem you want to solve and start writing the program to get to the solution. I got sucked in with Twitter bots. I have a love/hate thing for Twitter. It’s like watching a river… a river full of garbage. But it’s a great place to learn Python. It’s so much fun to hack Twitter. It’s an incredible game of strategy: how much can you get away with before your account gets suspended? The best part is seeing immediate results. I was hooked when I wrote my first Twitter bot and saw the status update appear on my time line. “Hello, World!” on your Twitter account is much cooler than “Hello, World!” on your IDLE prompt.
I understand that it t can be difficult for a beginner to think of a project when he or she doesn’t know what the language is capable of doing. Here’s a starter project that you, knowing nothing about Python at the outset, could easily accomplish in a day:
write a password generator.
You will utilize all the basics, and then some, in writing a program that produces the perfect password. It’s a very simple script, but you can geek-out and get crazy complex with it.

Hit the Books

Before you start or hack an existing project, you need to know the basics. There are a lot of Python books out there. While all of them will teach you what you need to know, some are better than others. These are my favorites, in order of accessibility:

1. Think Python

Downey gets you thinking like a programmer, which is more important than knowing or learning what every damn little thing does. Don’t fill your brain with with this stuff. That’s what Google is for.
Each chapter is loaded with exercises that ask you to use what you just learned to solve interesting, more or less practical, problems.
It’s free online.

2. python.org

Seriously, what better place to learn Python than from the source. The tutorials are actually good. It’s like they really want you to learn this stuff. It’s technically not a book, but what’s a book anymore?

3. Practical Programming

This book is very good at not only explaining how Python works, but how your computer works as well, and why it’s important to know as a programmer. The authors also run a MOOC on Coursera, but the book is so much better. Buy it on Amazon.

4. Real Python for the Web

The Real Python ebook package is amazing. You will go from noob to (almost) pro in an amazingly short amount of time. As the title suggests, it’s catered to those wanting to use Python for web development. If that’s you, throw down the money and get the bundle. It’s worth every penny.
The three gentlemen behind Real Python are approachable, knowledgeable, and witty. They sporadically post tutorials on their blog that range from beginner to advanced. Start with Lyricize: A Flask app to create lyrics using Markov chains. You will not only learn Python, you’ll be introduced to Flask and Markov chains while creating an app that is pretty cool.

5. Writing Idiomatic Python

Jeff Knupp knows his stuff. Much of what he covers in his book is advanced, but what better time to learn best practices than when you’re just starting out. The examples are easy to follow and understand and you will be setting yourself up for the future. His blog, Everything I Know About Python…, is specifically focused on web developers using Django or Flask, but he often writes about Python in general. Starting a Python Project the Right Way is an excellent introductory post.

Non-trivial Pursuit

StackExchange

Search for solutions to your problem. I don’t mean that in some metaphysical, philosophical way. I mean use a search engine. When you do, go to any Stack link first. There are a lot of content farms and dead end links out there. Your time is precious, especially when you’re learning Pythion in your free time. Go to Stack Exchange and you will find more than one answer and often an interesting debate about best practices.
Caveat: StackExcahnge can be frustrating for beginners because you have to earn reputation points. It makes sense, but it also makes it seem impenetrable. Pay your dues. It’s worth it. Also, it’s not just for programming. It’s massive.

GitHub

GitHub is a great resource for beginners because so many beginners create repositories for their early projects. These simple programs will demonstrate how to practically implement the concepts you are learning elsewhere. I found countless Twitter bot scripts on GitHub that I downloaded, hacked, and modified. When you define the problem you want to solve, search GitHub. Chances are someone else already wrote a solution. Clone or fork their repo and see how they solved your problem. Then proceed to tear it apart until it does exactly what you want. To get started with GitHub, create an account and check out their bootcamp.
If you take this approach you’ll begin to get comfortable with Git and Github. If you want to get serious, and you’re also a Linux enthusiast, you should learn both. A lot of Pythonistas swear by Mercurial and Bitbucket. I’ve only used them cursorily, so I can’t say anything one way or another. I started with Git. It works for me. I’ll stick with Git.

Lists & Newsletters

Tutor

Sign up for the Python Tutor list. I learned, and still learn, so much from it. But, be warned. The temperament of the list changes seasonally. It will swing from compassionate to cruel. When it turns sour, I usually unsubscribe for a few months, and I’ll resubsrcibe when I need help with a problem and stick with it until it gets bad.
Also, your Inbox will quickly fill up with mail from the list. You should read every email and follow the discussions as they evolve, even if you don’t grok.

Python Weekly

Sign up for Python Weekly. While most of it will be over your head in the beginning, you will receive an excellent recap of the goings-on in the Python community for the past seven days. Read through ALL of the headlines, but only click on those that you understand. After a few months, you’ll be opening every link and frustrated because you don’t have enough time to read and work through all of the posts.

The Stuff That’s Really Popular

You may have noticed that there are a number of obvious omissions from my lists above.
Everyone cites Zed Shaw’s Learn Python the Hard Way. It’s an excellent overview, but it’s not beginner-friendly. It was one of the first resources I encountered, but I could not stick with it. Now that I know the basics and I work back through Zed’s tutorials, I am able to see that it’s very good, but better suited for someone with programming experience making a transition to Python.
Some people love Codecademy, but I felt like they were holding my hand through the lessons and when they let go at the end, I was completely lost. Also, programming in a browser based shell doesn’t feel right. If you really want to learn Python, do it locally, with IDLE or your shell.
My last employer was a lynda.com subscriber, so I took advantage of the opportunity and, well, slept through the Python courses they offered. I find screencasts very hard to watch.
And then there’s the MOOCs: Coursera, edX, and Udacity. I’ve started and never finished courses in each. I find the pace of MOOCs frustratingly slow and unless you’re taking the course in real time, you can’t access the faculty or community for help when you hit a wall. If you have A LOT of time to kill, take these courses. Otherwise, carve your own path. You’ll learn much more and arrive at the same destination much faster.

Conclusion

I hope these suggestions are useful and helpful. At the end of the day, you are your best resource. You drive the learning, don’t let the learning drive you. In the spirit of the origins of the language, the best way to learn Python is with a sense of humor. Now get hacking.

Improved Features Of New Kali Linux 2.0 And How To Upgrade To It

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

Kali 2.0 (Kali Sana) was released last week which means that we get to spend some time sifting through Offensive Security‘s latest release looking at all the new tools and tricks. Offensive Security promised us a better, more powerful penetration testing platform, and my preliminary look at 2.0 shows that they delivered.

Here is my previous article about kali linux 1.0:
An Introduction To Hacker’s OS: Kali Linux Setup Tutorial

Kali Linux 2.0 (Kali Sana) is the best Penetration testing distribution, well organized and with core tools and packages needed by Pentester to get started right after installation. Kali Linux 2.0 will be a rolling distribution and updates will be pulled continuously from debian testing. Kali 2.0 is based on debian 8 and available in lots of flavors. Kali Linux 2.0 ( Kali Sana) natively supports different desktop environments like xfce,gnome3,kde, mate,lxde,e.t.c

The Look Of Kali Linux 2.0

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

Kali 2.0 switched over to the GNOME3 interface which brings a much needed update to the user experence. This new UI gives you a customizable favorites bar, which will certainly come in handy, having your common tools at the ready at all times. The new Applications menu in the top bar comes with new, easier-to-understand groupings. This is wonderful if you’d like to have a quick glance at all of your available applications.

Better still, Kali 2.0 also natively supports KDE, Xfce, MATE, e17, lxde and i3wm so if you’re not a fan of the default, you can switch fairly easily to one that you’re more fond of.

The Tools

Kali 2.0 includes a variety of previously-unavailable-by-default toolset including Maltego, Responder from SpiderLabs, and a sleu of wireless penetration testing tools. All of these and more are accessible through the the multi-level navigation mentioned previously.

The Updates

One of my personal concerns with the previous version of Kali was that updates weren’t frequent enough and tools weren’t updated as often as they should. Kali 2.0 is now a rolling distribution, meaning more updates to both the operating system and the natively supported tools.

Improved Features of Kali Linux 2.0

This version of kali Linux is highly expected among the world. Because the teaser which was released by OPSC about this project became viral in internet. It was a 3.13 mins teaser which describes the new features added to the 2.0 version of this Kali Linux. Let’s see the new features added to this version of Kali Linux briefly.

1. Multi-Tasking :

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com
Multi Tasking Feature Seen at Right Side Of Desktop

It is the best feature of Kali Linux v.2.0 that I wish to mention here. It has multi taking feature such as android. The bitter truth is, the multi tasking feature in Kali Linux v.2.0 is better than they of multi tasking in android. It enables the user to run 10+ programs at instant. The experience of this feature depends upon the hardware of the system. All though it has multi tasking feature, making it perfect needs a good compeer or laptop with better specifications. Or else, it may not respond and led to force close of application. Whenever the usage of any feature exceeds, it leads to force close. This is common in all the operating system.

2. Redesigned User Interface :

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

However the operating system is powerful, the interface and display gives the a user, a sense of exploit. Kali Linux always gives us that feel. This version has a redesigned user interface. This gives us a streamlined working experience. The user interface of this version is really awesome and provides you, a smooth exploiting experience.

3. Restructured Menu and Tool Categories:

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

This adds beauty to this new version of llinux. Not only beauty, but also an feel of pentrstion testing.

4. Weekly Upstream Updates of Core Toolsets:

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

Users can either update it manually or automatically.

5. Native Ruby 2.0 Faster Metasploit Load Times :

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

Metasploit is one of the best tool used in Kali Linux. Considering the usage of this Metasploit, Makers of this Linux had given some more importance for it’s performence. They had fixed minor bugs and made this Metasploit, a better tool for penetration testing.

6. Built in Desktop Notifications :

This is also one of the best feature found in this version. Users don’t have to install any secondary software or frameworks to get Desktop notifications as out comes inbuilt with the operating system. As same as in android, this version has a notification which can either enabled or disabled by the user. It means that it is customizable. It joins with the Multi taking feature and gives on time notifications so that user won’t miss any important things. User will get notifications whenever a process is started, completed, updated or changed.

7. Built in screen casting :

The users of this penetrating system do not have to depend on secondary software for on screen recording as Screen casting has become a inbuilt feature. This is a nice move by the Team Kali Linux. Most of the features were same as that of in android. It is better to note that android is Linux based. Especially this screen casting, notification and multi tasking features proves that, the features were based on the features of android operating system.

8. Cutting Edge Wireless Penetration Testing Tools :

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

New Wireless Penetration Testing Tools were also included in this new version of Kali Linux. These tools run in terminal emulator. The main aspect of this tools are wireless penetration testing. Note that Wireless is different from remote. These tools are used for Wifi Cracking, Spoofing, Sniffing, and for other MITM attacks. This has made wireless Penetration testing, easier a lot that before.

How to upgrade to Kali Linux 2.0 (Kali Sana)

Some of you guys are still using Kali Linux 1.x and you wanna upgrade to Kali Linux 2.0 without full clean installation. Well, this can be done though the recommended way of getting Kali Linux 2.0 running smoothly is by performing full clean installation.

To upgrade to Kali Linux 2.0, you'll have to add Kali Sana repositories to your sources.list file, please don't append the kali sana repos, just overwrite existing repositories.

To do this just paste the following lines on your terminal:

cat << EOF > /etc/apt/sources.list
# Regular Repositories
deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free
# Source repositories
deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free
EOF

After adding repos, the next thing to do is system update and dist-upgrade, to do this type the following in terminal:
sudo apt-get cleansudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgradesudo reboot

If you want to do a fresh installation, head to download page:
Download Kali Linux ISO image

Then get the version of Kali Linux 2.0 that you need. Create a bootable flash drive by using dd command, example is shown below:
dd if=/home/jose/Downloads/kali-linux-1.1.0-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=512k

Replace if='' With the location of your Kali Linux ISO image. The of option is the output file and specify the destination to write to, e.g /dev/sdb in our case above.

You can use the following command to know your flash drive mount location
sudo fdisk -l

You'll get output similar to one below:

kali-linux-2.0-features-upgrade-update- picateshacks.com

If you are a windows guy, the download win32diskimager, install it and create bootable flash disk. You can also make bootable DVD and boot kali off of it.

Final words

Basically, Offensive Security did a bang-up job upgrading the look and feel of Kali to something more modern and usable. I moved away from Kali 1.0 over the course of its life-cycle due to update and compatibility issues. Of course, as a pentester, logging in and opening a terminal minimizes the importance of the shiny UI (but it is a pretty nice upgrade). Thankfully, regular updates for both the tools and the operating systems are going to be pushed, and for the time being, I will be using Kali 2.0 as my main pentesting platform.

Hackers Could Hijack Your Facebook Fan Page With This Trick

Hackers Could Hijack Your Facebook- picateshackz.com

Facebook bounty hunter Laxman Muthiyah from India has recently discovered his third bug of this year in the widely popular social network website that just made a new record by touching 1 Billion users in a single day.

At the beginning of the year, Laxman discovered a serious flaw in Facebook graphs that allowed him to view or probably delete others photo album on Facebook, even without having authentication.

Just after a month, Laxman uncovered another critical vulnerability in the social network platform that resided in the Facebook Photo Sync feature, that automatically uploads photos from your mobile device to a private Facebook album, which isn’t visible to any of your Facebook friends or other Facebook users.

However, the flaw discovered by Laxman could allowed any third-party app to access and steal your personal photographs from the hidden Facebook Photo Sync album.

Hacking Any Facebook Page

Now, the latest bug in Laxman's list could allow attackers to take over control of your Facebook pages.

This time Laxman has found an issue with the "Facebook business pages" that are not specific to a single user account, but instead represent a business and are usually managed by a number of users.

However, Laxman could allow third-party apps to take complete control of a Facebook business page with limited permissions, possibly making the victim permanently lose administrator access to the page.

Here's How:

Third party Facebook applications are capable of performing all sets of operations, including post status on your behalf, publishing photos, and other tasks, but Facebook doesn't allow them to add or modify page admin roles.

Facebook allows a page administrator to assign different roles to different people in the organisation through manage_pages, a special access permission requested by third-party apps.

However, according to Laxman, an attacker can use a simple string of requests in an attempt to make himself as admin of the particular Facebook page.

Sample Request

The string something look like this:

POST /PGID/userpermissions HTTP/1.1Host: graph.facebook.comContent-Length: 245role=MANAGER&user=X&business=B&access_token=AAAA…

Here, page PGID belongs to business B, where one can manage_pages request to make user 'X' as a MANAGER (assign as an administrator) of the page.

This means these small changes in the request parameters could allow an attacker to gain complete control over your Facebook page.

Video Demonstration

Laxman has also provided a video demonstration that shows the attack in work. You can watch the video given below that will walk you through the entire procedure:

Laxman reported the flaw to the Facebook security team and received the reward of $2500 USD as a part of Facebook's bug bounty program.

Though the social network has now fixed the loophole, you must always be aware of the permissions you grant to any third-party applications.

New Android Vulnerable - Hackers To Take Over Your Phone

New Android Vulnerable to Hackers- picateshackz.com

This time Everything is Affected!

Yet another potentially dangerous vulnerability has reportedly been disclosed in the Google's mobile operating system platform – Android.

Android has been hit by a number of security flaws this month, including:
  •  Stagefright vulnerability that affects 950 Million Android devices worldwide
  • A critical mediaserver vulnerability that threatened to crash more than 55 percent of Android devices
  • Another critical flaw (CVE-2015-3842) discovered last week, affected almost all the versions of Android devices
This time the issue resides in the multitasking capability of the Android phones, the ability to run more than one app at a time.

The security flaw gives hacker ability to spy on Android smartphone owners, steal login credentials, install malware, and many more, according to the latest research conducted by the researchers at thePennsylvania State University and FireEye.

How the Attack Works?

According to security researchers, the flaw could be exploited to lure the victim into unwittingly handing over their login details into a spoofed user interface, controlled by a hacker, when an Android user starts an app.

The device owner won't at all be aware that they are typing their sensitive details into a malicious software program masquerading as a legit Android app.

The researchers published their research in a paper titled, "Towards Discovering and Understanding Task Hijacking in Android" [PDF], which they presented at the USENIX Security 15 conference in Washington DC last week.

The study explained practical details of how multitasking within Android differs from multitasking within desktop operating systems that focused on what happens when an app or multiple apps run in one or multiple processes simultaneously creating Multi-Tasks.

Multitasking in Android allows us to gain advantage in a way:
  • By being able to switch between the apps
  • Apps being able to maintain their state in the background
  • Easy task or app switching

Task Hijacking Attacks on Large Scale

Android task management mechanism is threatened by severe security risks. When maltreated, these convenient multitasking features can backfire and initiate task hijacking attacks on a vast scale.

The researchers analyzed more than 6.8 Million apps from multiple Android app stores and found that the task hijacking flaw is prevalent in all apps. Since many Android apps depend on "the current multitasking design, defeating task hijacking is not easy."

The researchers also claimed that the vulnerability can impersonate the user interface of the app, which is controlled by the attacker on the other hand.

You can watch the video to find the quick overview of the vulnerability.

This is just one scenario where the attacker is deploying phishing attack on Android users, and gaining their privacy credentials.

Yet More to Come

There can be instances where the users can be the victims of Ransomware, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and other cyber attacks.

The five security researchers – Peng Liu and Chuangang Ren from the Pennsylvania State University, and Yulong Zhang, Tao Wei and Hui Xue from FireEye – involved in the research reported the security hole to the Android team.
"We appreciate this theoretical research as it makes Android's security stronger," said a Google spokeswoman.
You are safe as; as Google said that customers are protected from hijacking and phishing attacks withAndroid's Verify Apps and Safety Net features.

Also, you can keep yourself safe by installing apps from trusted sources and keeping your safety completely with you.

Web Encryption Protocol That Even Quantum Computers Can't Crack

Quantum_Computers_Can't_Crack- picateshackz.com

Sometimes, instead of black and white we tend to look out, how a grey would look?

Yes, today we are going to discuss the ‘entangling’ or ‘superpositioning’ which is a power packed functionality of quantum computers. And simultaneously, how can they pose a threat when fully launched in the world.

Superposition is a state in which a system can be in multiple stages i.e. it can be ‘up’ and ‘down’ at the same time. The Quantum systems can hit different modules of a problem simultaneously, split across possible versions of the universe.

What are Quantum Computers?

Quantum_Computers_Can't_Crack- picateshackz.com

Quantum computers are going to be the next huge development in computing for processing data, with an ability to perform calculations thousands of times faster than today’s modern supercomputers.

Quantum computing is not well suited for tasks such as word processing and email, but it is ideal for tasks such as cryptography, modeling and indexing enormous databases.

A quantum computer can compute in minutes or hours what a conventional computer would take years or much longer to do the same action.

Quantum computers are threatening to kill something on which we have the highest faith.

Want to know what that is? Read on...

Quantum Computers vs. Encryption

‘Encryption’- the thing on which the privacy and security of whole Internet depend on - is going to abolish with the production of quantum computers.

When a message is secured with a modern encryption system, the keys used to lock it are typically very large in numbers; tens, if not hundreds, of digits long.

Therefore, finding that key and breaking the lock means using a computer to carry out lots of sums and then trying each answer to see if it unlocks a message or not is a huge task for hackers.

As per Peter Shor, a mathematician, who says fully working quantum computer could factor large numbers easily, thus making it capable of breaking already existing strongest forms of encryption, used to protect things like financial and medical data.

The CIA, Google, NSA and Microsoft have already set up their labs and working hard to build such a system that could create either revolution or panic!

New Encryption Protocol that Even Quantum Computers can’t Crack

However, before the development of Quantum computers, we need a quantum computer-proof web encryption protocol to keep the Internet a safer place for next generation.

Microsoft has already took an initiative, and is working with chip maker NXP and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), to build a new protocol of key exchange model that is suitable for use in SSL/TLS and can’t be cracked easily by Quantum computers.

The team has already developed a robust encryption protocol prototype that they explained can slow down cracking process by 21 percent than the versions using elliptic curve cryptography.

Rather than multiplying large prime numbers together, or using elliptic curve cryptography, the mathematical operation of new protocol is based upon multiplying polynomials together, then adding some random noise, which makes it much harder to crack.

Future of Quantum Computing?

As we live in the notion where encryption is rock-solid and is unbreakable. However, within the foreseeable future, cracking those same codes could become accessible, thanks to quantum computing.

Quantum computers have a lot of potential, which can be of a great advantage like they can allow researchers to design better circuits as well as offers sturdy growth in artificial intelligence.

D-Wave One, a Canada-based Quantum computing company developed the only commercially available quantum computer. And within a period of 2 years it has doubled its computational power.
